Engineering Camaraderie on the Ice
April 10, 2017
R&M CONSULTANTS, INC.’s (R&M) hockey team finished their inaugural year with a 7-1-2 record. The team brings together employees from various positions and departments, as well as R&M family members and sub-consultants. Game days vary throughout the week (and sometimes the weekend), and can start as late as 10:45 PM!
The time spent with coworkers and peers outside the office encourages open communication and creates a more collaborative work environment. “Playing on a team with coworkers has been a great experience. We have every level of employee from managers, project engineers and interns working together to be the best team in our division,” said Greg Shearer, PE, CISEC, a Project Engineer in R&M’s Construction Administration Department. Greg grew up playing hockey and has earned his spot as one of R&M’s first-line defensemen.
Kevin Robar, LSIT, the team’s other first-line defensemen, is a Land Surveyor who joined R&M in 2010. “We have great camaraderie among the diverse mix of disciplines and responsibility levels represented on the team, and we all come together on the ice to represent R&M as best we can,” he said about the opportunity to play amidst coworkers. “Many of the same talents that make each of us valuable to the firm, also contributed to the hard-won success of our hockey team’s first year…plus it’s a whole lot of fun!”
R&M’s Group Manager of Surface Transportation, Tim Grier, PE, has been with the firm for 10 years. Having played hockey for the Dimond Lynx in high school, he was persuaded by engineering staff to hit the ice once again. “We’ve been lucky to maintain a culture of respect for each other’s strengths, both in the office and on the ice. Our record reflects the team’s hard work. Each player has excelled in their position, contributing to the success of the season. It’s been fun to watch the staff develop, both on the ice and in the office.”
Currently, Team R&M is in its spring season with a 9-0-1 record and head to the finals next week! Empowering our employees and providing a workplace that fosters collaboration, creativity and teamwork, results in our staff’s commitment to quality, client service and excellence that keeps clients returning to R&M.
