Jean Cumlat joined R&M CONSULTANTS, INC. (R&M) as a Staff Engineer in the firm’s Engineering Department in April 2016.

Jean is part of R&M’s Waterfront Engineering Group. As a part of this group, she will be involved with civil and structural design of port and harbor development projects, including docks, wharfs, marina float systems, boat launch and barge loading ramps, breakwaters and erosion control projects. Her responsibilities include civil and structural analysis, coastal modeling, dredging design, corrosion protection, water and sewer utilities, and other upland site development associated with these projects.

“I was referred to R&M by my supervisors at the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) in Juneau. They highly recommended the firm as a great place to work. I really like it here. I’m still working with marine facilities, which I did at DOT&PF, and really enjoy it.”

Jean spent the last three years as an intern with DOT&PF in their Marine Facilities Department. She provided support for several marine facility projects, including helping to format, compile and edit the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Alaska Marine Highway System Shore Conditions Report. She was also involved with the Kodiak Ferry Terminal Master Plan, Clark Bay Ferry Terminal Replacement, Haines Ferry Terminal Improvements, Port Alexander Outer Harbor Replacement and several other harbor improvement projects. Her responsibilities included assisting with preparation of preliminary and final bid documents, as well as environmental permit drawings.

Since joining R&M, Jean has assisted with the Valdez Harbor Development project. She received her B.S in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage this month. Jean was born and raised in Juneau, moving to Anchorage to attend college. She spends her summers outside hiking, fishing and boating with her parents and loves to travel – she has a trip planned to London next year.
