R&M’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament Raises Funds for RBI Alaska

On August 12, R&M’s clients, employees, families and friends descended on the Anchorage Golf Course to golf, have fun and support RBI Alaska, a local non-profit organization focused on supporting underserved Alaskan ball players.

“R&M chose RBI Alaska to support this year because we believe in the important work the organization is trying to do to make baseball more accessible within our community.

80 golfers participated in this year’s tournament. Participants generously donated to the organization, resulting in $4,240 raised for the organization.

RBI Alaska’s mission is to provide a subsidized program leveraging community, volunteer and financial support, and offering experienced, positive mentors to help Alaska’s young people reach their life goals through sports. To support this goal, they are developing an indoor baseball and softball facility to benefit kids living in northeast Anchorage, which will provide a year-round space for kids to play unencumbered by weather restrictions and economic hurdles.

“My two boys played baseball throughout their childhoods and they continue to play now, one at the college club level and one for a junior college, and I am very aware of how expensive the sport has gotten to be,” said Andrea. “Participation is cost prohibitive for people with lower incomes. You can see the disparity in participation numbers at the different Anchorage youth leagues and high school programs. RBI Alaska is trying to level the playing field and get more kids in underserved areas playing the sport. R&M has been involved with development of their indoor baseball facility in Mountain View, and our golf tournament allowed us to support the organization in another way.”

R&M has held an annual golf tournament for many years. In 2010, the company decided to have the event benefit a designated local non-profit. Over the past 12 years, the golf tournament has raised more than $40,000 for local groups. Past charity organizations include Skiku, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska, Breast Cancer Focus, Parks for All, Healthy Futures, Children’s Lunchbox, Anchorage Park Foundation and the Erin K. Johnson Memorial Fund.
