In A Nutshell

R&M is looking for a team-oriented Engineering Technician to support expansion of our materials testing team and increase the firm’s presence on Kodiak Island.

As a member of the R&M team, the Engineering Technician will perform materials testing on samples in a remote field laboratory and in the field and coordinate with the City of Kodiak, contractors and private clients to provide accurate information on manufactured and incorporated construction materials.

This is a seasonal position based on Kodiak Island and typically requires overtime hours. The ideal candidate will be based in Kodiak or willing to work on Kodiak Island for extended periods of time during the construction season.

The Engineering Technician will report to the Group Manager of Materials Testing and Special Inspections.

On Any Given Day

On a typical day, the Engineering Technician will:

  • Perform field sampling and testing on projects for soils density analysis.
  • Perform testing to determine properties of fresh concrete during placement.
  • Perform sampling and testing during Hot Mix Asphalt paving operations.
  • Sample aggregates during production of concrete and/or asphalt at the batch plant.
  • Perform particle size analysis testing on sampled aggregate from concrete and/or HMA batch plant.
  • Communicate with clients to evaluate schedule for following day and collaborate with City of Kodiak representatives to provide services at critical projects.
  • Deliver daily test results via e-mail at the end of each daily shift.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have two or more years of experience performing tests on relevant materials. The applicant shall be able to demonstrate, either by oral or written examination, their ability to perform the tests normally required in the manner stipulated under the governing test procedures (WAQTC, ACI or NICET) and shall be capable of evaluating the test results in terms of specification compliance. Good basic math skills are required and basic skills in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook Word, Excel). High School diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska Driver’s license is required.

All candidates should have good interpersonal abilities for working in a dynamic team environment, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
