Mark D. Anderson, PE recently joined R&M as the firm’s Group Manager of Structural Engineering.
Mark has 40 years of Alaskan experience in all aspects of structural engineering, including analysis and design, specification and design criteria development, seismic qualification, seismic hazard evaluation and mitigation, pipe stress analysis and piping system support/restraint design, failure analysis, peer review and QC. He has worked on pipelines, pump stations, utility systems, public and private facilities, bridges, docks and other related structures. Mark has also served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, teaching senior level design courses in timber and concrete.
As Group Manager, Mark is responsible for managing R&M’s Structural Engineering Group. The work includes the planning, design and development of structures and foundations for military, commercial, institutional and educational facilities suited to Alaska’s arctic, subarctic, maritime and temperate regions, as well as supporting bridge, transportation, site development, utility, and port and harbor projects. Mark understands that engineering is a service profession and seeks to provide the best value available to his clients with the highest level of service, professional ethical standards and earned trust.
“I am at the stage where I would really like to share all that I have that is of value with those who want to grow and go farther than I have, which I look forward to doing at R&M. I have had a number of ideas, some bigger than others, bumping around in my head for many years, but very limited opportunities as a self-employed consultant to see if they could ‘fly’ in the marketplace of ideas. I’m excited about the potential for innovation at R&M, across broader sectors of work than I had access to working solo.”
Mark’s experience includes structural and seismic engineering consulting services for the oil industry for the past 22 years on projects such as the Gas Compressor Vibration Mitigation project for Milne Point, Akutan Pollock Processing Plant assessment and modifications, North Pole Power Plant Expansion – Phase 1, and Pogo Mine and Quartz Hill Mine Property Access Road Bridges. Prior to that, Mark worked for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company where he was responsible for re-establishing the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) seismic program. In the 1980s, he was the structural engineer for the Mears Middle School, Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center, Dimond Center Tower and Anchorage Airport (South) Terminal Expansion projects.
Since joining R&M, Mark has provided structural quality control and design input for the Port of Alaska Petroleum Cement Terminal project.
“I had known of R&M since I arrived back in Alaska in 1981, but had no idea that my skill set and ‘tool box’ might be useful here. I’ve found the staff wonderfully welcoming. I even have an office with windows and daylight outside! I’ve spent most of the last 23 years in an office below ground – it really was a cave!”
Mark has a B.S and a M.S. in Civil Engineering, both from the University of Idaho. He is a professional civil engineer licensed in Alaska and Washington and is licensed as a professional structural engineer in Alaska.
Outside of work, Mark enjoys any time spent with his wife of 36 years, Lynne; although, his favorite activity with her would be boating in the salt water and netting/gaffing/harpooning her fish. He also enjoys hiking, backpacking and long road trips in their travel trailer, which has traveled more than 100,000 miles throughout the U.S. One of Mark’s favorite movies is The Ultimate Gift with James Garner. He particularly enjoys the scene where the grandfather figure (Garner) reminisces about how he first introduced himself to the young attorney who became his life-long legal counsel and associate (and kidney donor), with the line “You see, I have a few ideas…”.
