While this year’s charity golf tournament started out rainy and cold, the skies cleared up and our golfers pushed through to raise $4,520 for local non-profit organization Skiku.
Skiku’s (a name that combines the Iñupaiq word for ice—siku—with ski) goal is to get Alaska skiing. They provide annual cross-country skiing instruction to the children of more than 40 urban and rural Alaskan communities. Skiku’s efforts foster the health, recreation and competitive sports benefits of cross-country skiing, biathlon and summer running.
80 golfers participated in this year’s tournament, consisting of employees, partners, clients, friends and family. Several Skiku volunteers also took part in the tournament, including Brad Cruz.
“Skiku was honored and gratified to be the beneficiary of R&M’s golf tournament. The money raised is enough to pay the airfare for a team of four volunteer coaches to get to a remote Alaskan village where the kids eagerly await them. These trips are often life changing events for the coaches, as well as for the folks in the village who learn to propel themselves around on skis on the snow for exercise, fun, or to go hunting and trapping.”
Brad Cruz, Skiku Volunteer
R&M has held this annual golf tournament for many years. In 2010, the firm decided to have the event benefit a designated local non-profit. Over the past 10 years, the golf tournament has raised more than $41,000 for numerous local charity organizations.
If you weren’t able to attend, you can still donate to Skiku through their website.
