This rehabilitated Runways 10-28 and 3-21 with stabilized base course and provided a long-term solution for the settlement occurring at the end of Runway 10. This area was reconstructed using 1,222 8” micro piles, installed on an 8’ triangular grid and seated on bedrock to support the runway end as a “bridge” structure. The design also included Runway 28 crack repair, ARFF apron repair, lighting replacement, paving and striping.
R&M performed a geotechnical investigation/recommendations and prepared an EDR, CSPP, ESCP and PS&E. R&M is also providing construction inspection services, submittal reviews and change order documentation.
Construction was completed in 2022.
Air transportation is vital to the regional hub community of Nome. R&M’s innovative design using micro piles to mitigate settlement will greatly reduce maintenance costs.
