The 1,000’ hybrid concrete and timber Water Street Viaduct was last rehabilitated in the late 1970s and had major deficiencies, including severe deterioration, corrosion, cracking and drainage concerns. The replacement project involved many specialized tasks due to unique location, historic setting and complex nature. The R&M team – with expertise in retained soil, bridge and utilities – developed a design that allowed for improvement to existing drainage, retaining walls, structures and utilities that could be constructed given the limited access, especially under the bridge. To reduce congestion on the bridge, our team relocated power and communication utilities along 3rd Avenue and Tongass Avenue. The project also replaced water, sewer and drainage facilities throughout.
