In December 2020, record-breaking rainfall triggered a landslide on Beach Road in the community of Haines. To evaluate the hazards and risks associated with the landslide, R&M subcontracted Landslide Technologies and Siemens Geophysics to conduct surface reconnaissance and subsurface investigations. Instrumentation was also installed on both the surface and within the subsurface to monitor any ground movement and to monitor groundwater pressures. R&M land surveyors worked with stakeholders to establish and build a remote total station monitoring system. Results from the multiple field efforts resulted in final finding report which detailed the landslide failure mechanism, modeled potential future debris flow paths, and evaluated hazards and risks to the public.

R&M’s work on this project ensures the Haines community is aware of and prepared for future landslides, minimizing property damage and risk to residents.

Seismic refraction and electrical resistivity geophysical data collection and field analysis.
Helicopter-supported drilling operations and installation of subsurface instrumentation.
