R&M performed a geotechnical characterization of the 416-mile haul road route to assess foundation soil conditions. We identified and mapped landform profiles/terrain units along the route centerline; characterized landforms; outlined a strategy for using thaw-strain potentials in thermal analysis of thaw settlement; and identified route conditions, features and concerns of interest for future planning and design. R&M then provided engineering services for the design of the 56-mile segment of highway between Livengood and the Yukon River. This highway initially served as a haul road for the transport of the materials and workers involved in construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System.
