R&M designed improvements to a 4.5-mile section of roadway that traverses the mountainside above Six-Mile Creek and crosses Canyon Creek near Hope with an 885’ major bridge structure founded on large diameter drilled concrete shafts extending into bedrock. Notable design features were the large rock cuts, drainage structures for steep mountainside creeks and streams, and erosion protection of the till slopes. The hydrology and hydraulics study conducted for the project included an HEC-2 analysis of Canyon Creek. Since this is the only route between Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula, R&M carefully considered traffic control for rock blasting and developed plans to accommodate the trucking, tourist and general public traffic.
This project improved the last remaining section of the Old Seward Highway between Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula, including replacing an aging bridge structure over Canyon Creek, greatly improving safety along this scenic byway.
