R&M provided construction administration services for this Roller Compacted Concrete bridge replacement project. The bridge replacement features embankment construction for roadway realignment and wayside scenic parking area, blasting along the roadway to create room for the new roadway alignment, rock bolting and water drainage realignment. R&M ensured materials incorporated into the bridge replacement met construction contract requirements, and construction operations documentation and federally mandated programs administration conformed to FHWA funding requirements and the Alaska Construction Manual.

R&M provided a complete construction administration support team consisting of office engineering, field inspection and materials testing, and also project engineering in the third construction season.

The replacement of the historic cable-stayed bridge provides better geological response to local seismic activities and extends the useful life. The cable-stayed bridge was repurposed as a pedestrian walkway and wayside historic attraction.

Construction started with a corrugated steel bridge set on footings at the bottom of the gorge, permitting free flowing of creek water.
Borrowing from dam-building techniques, the steel bridge was covered with more than 22,000 cy of roller compacted concrete, essentially making the bridge function as a large culvert.
