R&M CONSULTANTS, INC.’s (R&M) Chief Executive Officer, Len Story, PLS is also shaping future leaders through his love of baseball. In early December, Len – known more as a five-time Arctic Man champion than a baseball coach – was presented with the 2016 Ripken Baseball Youth Coach of the Year award in Washington, D.C. The award is a collaboration between Ripken Baseball and Baseball America and is given to the youth coach who represents The Ripken Way – values that include character, commitment, community, integrity, passion, perseverance and teamwork.

“We are so proud to name Coach Story as the 2016 Youth Coach of the Year… His model behavior instills a love for the game and passion for learning that extends well beyond the diamond.”

John Bramlette – Ripken Baseball Executive Vice President of Amateur Baseball

Len has coached baseball in Alaska since 1999, and now coaches a team of 13-year-olds with a perspective that reaches beyond the ball field.

Len resurrected the Anchorage Quakes traveling baseball team in 2014, and two years later caught the eye of Ripken Baseball when the team went 2-2 in a national three-day tournament in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The team’s success continued throughout the summer when his Abbott-O-Rabbit League All-Star team went 11-2 and outscored its opponents 158-30.

Curt Hebert, Assistant Coach and parent of one of the players, said Len brought out-of-the-box thinking to the job, including bringing the kids on Fridays for board meetings in the R&M conference room, where the goal was baseball and beyond.

“It was about how baseball translates into life. It’s about getting them to be stronger mentally as well as physically.”

For Len, work, baseball and family go hand-in-hand.

“It’s the impact I have on the kids. We had a full house of kids watching the World Series. That’s what’s important to me, helping build our next set of leaders.”

For the upcoming season, the Quakes have already been hard at work with practices since January, including dry land training, skills drills, hitting and individual skills practices. Regular season starts May 2, and the team will also play in a national three-day tournament over Memorial Day weekend. The Quakes will face top-notch teams from around the country at the 13U Memorial Day Classic 2017 MB Tournament, hosted at the Ripken Experience Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

An R&M employee since 1979, Len worked his way up from field surveyor to Vice President with responsibility for management of the Surveying and Mapping Department, to his current position as Chief Executive Officer. He offers strong leadership and operational knowledge and has played an important role in implementing the firm’s operational structure since 2002. A member of R&M’s senior management team, Len plays a vital role in advancing the firm’s existing work by supporting the operational departments and leading execution of R&M’s strategic plan. He is also the President of the firm’s Board of Directors. Len holds an A.A.S. in Engineering/Surveying Technology from the Oregon Institute of Technology.
