Vanessa Crandell-Beck recently joined R&M as an Environmental Geologist in the firm’s Earth Sciences Department. In this role, Vanessa will support contaminated site and geotechnical investigation work, including subsurface investigation and site characterization, chemical sampling, material site assessment, geologic mapping, engineering geology, aerial photo interpretation, planning, budgeting and executing environmental and geotechnical site investigations, technical report writing and data analysis for a variety of Alaskan infrastructure projects.

Vanessa is a talented environmental scientist with six years of experience. She has conducted Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments (ESA); hazardous building material inventories; air sampling; installation, development, sampling and decommissioning of groundwater monitoring wells; and soil gas sampling. Vanessa has also prepared workplans, reports and proposals, and participated in remediation projects throughout Alaska. Her project experience includes conducting Phase I and Phase II ESAs at Thumb Bay on Night Island, which included searching for contamination at a 100-year old cannery; asbestos and lead-based paint remediation at Kaasan on Prince of Wales Island; and testing of contaminated soil, collection of laboratory analytical samples and reporting for an environmental remediation project on Barter Island on the north slope of Alaska.

Vanessa holds a B.A. in Geology and a B.S. in Oceanography, both from Humboldt State University, as well as a M.S. in Geology from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She is an Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Qualified Environmental Professional; 40-hour HAZWOPER certified, AHERA Building Inspector and EPA Lead-Based Paint Inspector. Vanessa loves to explore the hiking trails in Chugach National Forest and go off-roading in her Jeep Wrangler. She recently adopted a five-year old dog named Lucy who joins her three cats.
