Two R&M staff members have earned professional certifications in their respective fields. Erica Betts, PH, CESCL, a Senior Environmental Specialist, has earned her Professional Hydrologist (PH) certification and Marta Kumle, CMH, GISP, a Senior Hydrographer, has earned her Certified Master Hydrographer (CMH) designation.

The PH certification is administered by the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH), an organization dedicated to enhancing and strengthening the standing of hydrology as a science and a profession. This certification recognizes professionals based on their education, personal integrity and experience who demonstrate competence in the field of hydrology and commit themselves to a certain ethical conduct. Eligible professionals must have five years of experience having significant responsibility and experience in hydrology, plus a bachelor’s degree.

Erica has 17 years of experience providing GIS, environmental and hydrology support, with 14 of those years in Alaska. She is skilled in agency coordination, environmental documentation preparation and permitting for transportation and utility projects, and has managed numerous environmental projects. Erica’s experience modeling hydrologic processes on the North Slope provides valuable insight while providing H&H analysis on design projects and when developing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans. Erica has a B.S in Biology from Purdue University. She also has a M.S. in Civil Engineering and a Master of City and Regional planning, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Erica is an Alaska Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead and trained in Wetland Delineation and RCRA Hazardous Waste Management. On the weekend, she is usually either out running or biking. She also enjoys camping, cooking, fishing, gardening and Nordic skiing.

The CMH certification is administered by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), an organization that serves as the voice of the professional surveying community in the U.S. and its territories. This certification is the highest attainable level for a hydrographer. It recognizes professionals based on their experience and expertise in their field, showing they are fully capable of undertaking and managing hydrographic surveys that meet IHO current standards of S-44 and the more detailed U.S. standards and specifications provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Marta has 18 years of experience in the hydrographic surveying and GIS industries. She has spent most of her career in Alaska, specializing in shallow water and coastal projects throughout the state. Marta’s hydrographic strengths include project planning, data processing and product quality control. Marta’s GIS skills include geoprocessing, GIS database design and web applications. She has managed hydrographic projects for challenging and high-profile projects, including for NOAA and private contractors. Marta has a Master of GIS & Sustainability Management and a B.S. in Oceanography, both from the University of Washington. She is Certified GIS Professional and an FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot. Outside of work, Marta is usually chasing her kids around outside.
