R&M performed a large design survey for the Nanwalek-Port Graham Airport Relocation project. The design survey mapped the existing ground for the road corridor connecting the communities of Nanwalek and Port Graham to the new airport. Field surveys included establishing horizontal and vertical control, township retracement, subdivision ties, one-foot contour topography, planimetrics, utilities and hydrology surveys. The survey also required timber falling, trail establishment and working from a boat moored off the coast.

Existing airports in Nanwalek and Port Graham have numerous safety deficiencies. Development of a new, shared airport will improve air service for both communities and will include a new 3.5-mile access road traversing the mountainous terrain that serves as a barrier between communities.

This survey was completed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Local restrictions prevented the survey crew from obtaining housing within the community, so they took up residence on an offshore vessel for the two-month-long duration of the field survey for the access road corridor.
R&M’s Hank Brinker, PLS, CFedS was the surveyor in charge of the field surveys and topographic mapping. He demonstrated how surveying (and timber falling) in remote areas of Alaska is unlike anywhere else.
