R&M performed geotechnical investigations for the reconstruction of the Dalton Highway from MP 18 to 37. The investigations occurred at a variety of locations including portions of the highway that will be realigned, historically unstable and portions of the highway embankment, and potential local material sources adjacent to the highway. R&M geologists and geotechnical engineers logged test borings and rock core in complex permafrost and unstable embankment conditions. R&M oversaw acquisition, installation and measurement of inclinometers, thermistors and piezometers set in portions of the highway embankment. The data collected from these investigations were used to support development of construction documents.
The Dalton Highway provides the only vehicle access between Fairbanks and Deadhorse and serves as a critical supply route between commerce and industrial centers. This project will enhance safety and performance and reduce maintenance costs.
