Glenn Highway Capacity Improvements, Materials Testing

Client
Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Location
Eagle River, Alaska
Construction Value
$95.6 million

Phase 1 realigned 3.2 miles of northbound highway lanes and Phase 2 realigned 1.8 miles of the southbound highway lanes. Both phases included new concrete bulb tee girder bridges over Eagle River. Materials testing played a significant part of this capacity improvements construction project. R&M materials technicians were on-site daily to perform compaction, concrete and asphalt testing. Concrete testing was critical to verifying the concrete compressive strength of the bridges. Asphalt testing was completed during paving operations to close-out the project. R&M’s materials technicians worked collaboratively with the contractor on this challenging project, resulting in a quality project.

This project realigned the highest AADT road in the state to increase capacity and constructed a new bridge to decrease the grade of the infamous “brake light hill”.

Concrete compressive strength testing of test cylinders supported the concrete demands of this challenging project.
