Newtok Airport Relocation

Client
Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Location
Mertarvik, Alaska
Construction Value
$30 million

R&M performed surveying, geotechnical investigation/recommendations, public involvement, NEPA support, permitting and civil engineering for a new airport to serve the relocated community of Newtok. The new site at Mertarvik is located nine miles southeast of Newtok on the north end of Nelson Island on Baird Inlet. The new airport will consist of a gravel surfaced runway, taxiway, apron, access road, two equipment buildings, airfield lighting and NAVAIDS.

Relocation of the airport, including its existing operations, is important because the Mertarvik site is situated on an island with no roads connecting it to other communities.

Construction is scheduled for 2022 completion.

Erosion caused by the Ninglick River is estimated to impact the Newtok Airport by 2022. Relocation of the airport is part of creating the infrastructure necessary to provide the community with a safe, stable and healthy existence within their traditional lands.
