This project replaced an existing glulam bridge with two sections of 150’ long steel truss bridges connected to an enlarged structural steel viewing platform. R&M provided structural design of bridge abutments, platform structural steel framing and railing, and preliminary steel truss bridges. We modeled the design in Revit 3D software, ensuring existing trail grades would match connections to the new bridges and platform. We also exported the 3D model Google Earth where renderings of the new bridge were provided to the Municipality to share with the public prior to constructing the bridge. Innovative project work included performing a structural inspection of all existing steel piles prior to starting design work to look at the feasibility of reusing the piles.
The design for the replacement of this beloved and well-used community landmark incorporated user wishes, including lowering the height of the railings to allow for better viewing of wildlife in Westchester Lagoon. The new bridge improved safety and access and minimized year-round maintenance.
